Working alongside our founder and Cultural Director, Bill Harpe.

Dr Rebecca is an artist who combines her cultural practice with her role as a respected clinical practitioner in child and adolescent mental health. Dr Rebecca has trained in theatre, performed as a live artist and has written and lectured both in the UK and internationally on intergenerational trauma. Dr Rebecca is a graduate of Southampton Medical School and trained at The Poor School, ID Theatre School. Dr Rebecca is a Winston Churchill Fellow and a member of the National Black Arts Alliance.

Dr Rebecca will work with Bill Harpe, who as a co-founder of the Black-E (Connecting artists and communities) helped establish it as Britain's first national community arts project. Bill has continued to work at the Black-E as both artist and administrator. His work as an artist has focused on the arts and participation and creative and co-operative games.

Dr Rebecca says: "Liverpool, and the Black-E’s place in our nation’s history speaks to the generations of creators, often rendered invisible, who have made and shared great and magnificent work. I like to think that in many respects when my grandparents got off an Elder Dempster Lines ship in Liverpool, from the Gold Coast, it was at that moment my family history somehow entwined with Liverpool and the Black-E. Working with Bill a true visionary, who comes from the tradition of great thinkers & doers like John Ruskin, Jennie Lee and Joan Littlewood, fills me with a mixture of joy and trepidation. If I get lost on the way – I know the team at the Black-E will make sure we find a new route! "

Wendy Harpe, Chair of the Board, says: " Over 2021, during the COVID19 pandemic we met with many potential candidates. We wanted to appoint a cultural practitioner who knows the importance of building opportunity in partnership with our diverse communities. We were unanimous in our decision to appoint Dr Rebecca, because of her unique cultural expertise, work with local communities and approach to helping grow personal resilience. Her advocacy around mental health and intergenerational trauma will help us translate our work into the next phase of our journey."

Bill Harpe speaking on Dr Rebecca’s appointment said: “The choice of the trustees is inspired. I am very much looking forward to working with Dr Rebecca. I see this less about legacy, and more about working jointly and innovatively - as the bridge builders we need to be – building a bridge across troubled waters... connecting artists and communities.”

Featured

 Mon, 09 May 2022 16:18:46 +0000 root 763 at https://theblack-e.co.uk Destiny - A Family Panto https://theblack-e.co.uk/Destiny Destiny - A Family Panto helen365 Wed, 24/11/2021 - 5:27pm

The year is 2034 and we start this panto at the Time Travel Centre. This is the main headquarters for the quantum X 5000 experiment and one year ago today a group of elite scientists led by Dr Destiny Sinclair and Fate Lewis went into the desert to develop this top-secret project further. It was a major success and proved Destiny’s theory that one can time-travel within his or her lifetime.

However, pressured to prove her theories over and over again or lose funding, Dr Destiny Sinclair prematurely stepped into the project accelerator….and vanished. She awoke to find herself in the past, this time suffering partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not her own. Fortunately, contact with her own time is maintained through brainwave transmissions with Fate Lewis, the project observer, who appears in the form of a hologram that only Destiny can see and hear. Trapped in the past, Destiny finds herself leaping from life to life, putting things right that once went wrong and hoping each time that her next leap will be the leap back home.

Along the way we meet the quirky young scientist Skye McFly and her new scary invention; Fleshcreep. They both work for the evil Dr Reigns who you will definitely want to boo! However, are any of the baddies a match for the comedy duo Dame Velma Robinson and her nephew Dougal? Find out this winter at The Black-E.

This family panto adventure is based on Jack & the Beanstalk and is ideal for both children and adults. They are lazy, jobless and more often than not come up with one money making scheme after another.

The main thorn in the side of Bow and Arrow is the female Sheriff who rules=
Sherwood with an iron fist...and whip! The Sheriff also leads the Extreme Alliance. A group of baddies which includes Lance 'Glorious' Hemsley, Miss Thorn, and Brutal and by hook and by crook they only look after themselves.

Luckily...or unluckily for Bow and Arrow they have a mentor in the form of Friar Tuck. A monk with very little discipline and only as eyes for the men folk of Sherwood. Men are often seen running away from Friar Tuck. Other times he finds himself in many embarrassing situations. Either way Friar lives life to the full.

As the story develops, we learn that the Sheriff and Lance 'Glorious; Hemsley have a grand scheme to open a new adult club in the depths of Sherwood.
However, concerned about a strange red light appearing in the forest, the iron fist lady enlists Bow and Arrow (who are heavily in debt) to go and find out what the red light is all about.

Suffice to say things quickly turn pear shaped for our not so brave duo when Arrow is kidnapped by a mysterious figure. With no choice and wanting to find her best friend in the whole wide world...Bow forms a search party to go and search for Arrow.

Will Arrow ever be found? What is the mysterious red light all about? Can Bow save the day? and can anyone topple the Sheriff? One thing is for certain...this is not a show you will want to miss.

AN ADULT ONLY SHOW.
